Icarus (Astrology Deep Dive)

Asteroid #1566

Icarus is an interesting asteroid that (like many space objects) has ties to myth and astrology. It was discovered in 1949, so it’s definitely a more modern addition to astrology. Its namesake comes from Ancient Greek mythology.

The story starts with Icarus’s father, Daedalus. Daedalus, being an expert craftsman, was commissioned by King Minos to build a labyrinth. The labyrinth was created for the purpose of imprisoning the Minotaur. Ironically, Daedalus and Icarus ended up imprisoned themselves when the King found out that Daedalus assisted Theseus in the slaying of the Minotaur.

Still, Icarus’s father was a smart and skilled man. He crafted wings for each of them out of metal, leather, and beeswax in order to escape their imprisonment. Daedalus, having crafted the wings, knew how delicate they were. Before their escape, he gave his son a warning: follow the path, do not fly too close to the sea nor too close to the sun.

Once they were finally flying, Icarus was overcome with excitement. His father’s warnings took a backseat to the new taste of freedom and liberation pumping through his veins. He flew higher and higher, closer to the sun. The wax started to melt under the beating sun, destroying his wings. He desperately tried to beat his wings, but there was no use. As the crafted feathers of his wings fell, so did he. He plunged from the soaring skies into the sea where he ultimately drowned. His story is the origin of the phrase that someone “flew too close to the sun.”

Overall, the story teaches balance. By maintaining the middle path between the depths of the sea and the fire of the sun, we find liberation. Stray too far on either end, and we risk everything.

So how could we interpret this astrologically?

Icarus represents the longing to soar past limits, to be boundless, liberated, and free. This is where we reach beyond what’s allowed, and where our own excitement can become our undoing. Given the risk of falling, balance is needed. This is how we seek freedom and navigate high stakes.

The house placement can show us what area of life this applies to, and the sign can show us how. To incorporate the teachings from the myth, we can view the placement through not only its individual house or sign, but through the axis. Symbolically, these axes are like poles or integrated opposites. It feels appropriate given the opposition between the sun and sea.
